The History of the Dukes and Earls of Sutherland and their Estates
The history of the Dukes and Earls of Sutherland and of the way their estates were managed is colourful and at times controversial. A guide to the history with suggestions for further reading has been written by Dr. Annie Tindley of Glasgow Caledonian University and she has kindly allowed it to be reproduced here.
Sutherland Estates has a very large archive of paper documents generated over the last few centuries through the day to day business of estate management. It contains maps, plans, correspondence, surveys, specifications, reports, financial records etc. The estate office staff get many enquiries about the history of Sutherland Estates particularly from people seeking information about family members in previous generations.
Unfortunately due to the time required to carry out research we staff are unable to provide a helpful response in most cases. To assist those wanting to do their own research much of the archive has been deposited with the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh and a list of the papers on deposit can be seen on the library website.
Please contact the National Library directly if you would like to view particular documents.
